Welcome
to the June edition of Steril-Aire's UVC E-Newsletter. In each issue, we will
address an important question about ultraviolet-C or "UVC" devices for
building HVAC systems. Steril-Aire
will also be happy to provide you with a free on-site evaluation on how to equip
your building(s) for energy, mold, IAQ and infection control using UVC technology.
If you would like to know more, contact
us today. Q.
Is there an independent study that compares the effectiveness of UVC devices for
buildings? A.
Because of its ability to kill or inactivate airborne viruses and bacteria, UVC
has become an acknowledged control strategy for helping to safeguard buildings
against bioterrorist threats. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in conjunction
with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security, has released test reports on several
leading brands of UVC devices. The full reports are useful for comparing the different
devices and may be accessed at this link. For
UVC to be an effective control tool, you need the highest possible "dose
per watt", a measure of the energy required for microbial control. This important
measure of performance considers not only output but also the energy used by the
device in delivering that output.
The performance of the Steril-Aire UVC Emitter was evaluated through
RTI, under a subcontract to Battelle, through the EPA Technology Testing and Evaluation
Program. Data reduction in graph shows the relative dose per watt of the nine
devices tested. Click here to review the reports in their entirety.
